Before you begin a locksmith project, make sure you find out how long it will take. This will help you arrange it for the most convenient time. Every project is different so they tend to vary in length. But to give you a rough idea of how long yours will take, we’ve made a locksmith project timeline.
How long will a locksmith project take?
Research: 1 week
Providing your project isn’t an emergency, it’s a good idea to start by doing plenty of research. Look into the type of job you want doing to make sure it’ll achieve what you want it to. It’s also a good idea to put aside plenty of time for looking for local locksmiths and collecting quotes.
To find locksmiths in your area, ask relatives or friends for recommendations or use our service. Our companies should contact you within 24 hours of you submitting your enquiry.
After you’ve got quotes from multiple pros, look for customer reviews to help you work out which one to choose. A good professional should be able to give you examples of some of their customer feedback.
Work time: up to 1 day
Once you’ve found the right locksmith and they’re available to start work, you should be able to get the job you need done fairly quickly.
If you just need a door opening that you don’t have the key to, this could easily be done in 10 minutes or less. Changing or repairing a lock takes a bit longer – on average about 20 minutes for a yale lock or 45 minutes for a mortice lock. Obviously, the more locks you need repairing or changing the longer the job will take, but it’s very unlikely to take more than a day. Other jobs like reinforcing doors and fitting peepholes can also easily be done in a day.
Total time: 8 days max.
So typically, your locksmith project probably won’t take any longer than 8 days. To get in touch with local pros to help you with your project, complete our online form. We’ll match you with up to 4 locksmiths.
